Krishnananda Vyasadeva

Born sometime between 1794 and 1795, Krishnananda Vyasadeva was from Johaiani, Udaipur in the Mewar region of Rajasthan. He is said to have been trained in music in the Braj region of North India. The Goswamis of Vrindavan came to be so impressed by his musical prowess and knowledge of the subject that they conferred the title of "Raagsagar" on him.

Krishnananda Vyasadeva "Raagsagar" spent 32 years traveling and visiting prominent centres for music in North and South India, visiting and meeting eminent musicians and composers. It was in the course of his travels that he collected a vast number of song compositions from diverse genres of Indian vocal music in different Indian languages.

Around the year 1882 he decided to publish this large collection of song texts inspired possibly by Raja Radhakant Dev's "Shabdakalpadrum". The first volume of Raagsagar's collection titled "Sangeet Raagkalpadrum" was published in approximately 1842. The last volume was published in 1849.
