Awarded the Sangeet Kala Ratna, Uma Dogra is the senior most Ganda Bandh shagird (disciple) of Kathak exponent Durga Lal. One of the leading Kathak dancers of the country, Uma Dogra has been performing for audiences in India and abroad for more than three decades. She has devoted her entire life to her art, starting her training at the tender age of seven under Reba Vidyarthi of Lucknow Gharana at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. Her quest for enriching her art with the technique of the Jaipur Gharana led her to the leading light of this style - Kathak maestro Durga Lal. Uma Dogra’s perception of dance has also been enriched by her study of vocal music under her father Motiram Sharma who was a Sitar player. Uma is also a choreographer and teacher. Her commitment to the arts has seen her establish Samved Society For Performing Arts in 1990, in the memory of her guru Durga Lal. |
