Asif Ali-Manzoor Hussain Santoo Khan Qawwal & Party
Belonging from the Doaba Ang or Punjab style qawwali tradition, made famous by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the party is known by the name of its late founder Mushtaq Ahmad alias Santoo Khan. But the present Mohri’ (leaders) are his son, Manzoor Hussain and grandson, Asif Ali Khan. Asif Ali was performing at the Urs of the great Sufi saint, Syed Ali Hujveri in 1995 when he caught the eye of the legendary Nusrat who took young Asif under his tutelage. Asif feels honoured to be a ‘Gandaband Shagird’ (acknowledged pupil) of the late qawwali maestro. Asif carries on the legacy of his grandfather in his selection of Qalâm (poetry) and pronunciation of words.
